So, folks, after some 'stern lectures' from more than a few people, I have decided that I will put to use the complete waste of time that is Property Class, and update this journal thingy so that you all have some clue of what is going on in my life.
Well, I guess the most important thing is that I'm actually in law school now. Most of you reading this already know this from talking to me, but just in case I'd better make sure I get it all. I'm at Western, and absolutely loving it (for the most part, but more of that later). The people in my small group are awesome; 19 of us who have the exact same schedule for the entire year, so it's a good thing that we all manage to get along! We've kind of unofficially divided ourselves into the 'Old Marrieds' and the 'Young Funs', as it has been referred to. And yes, I am in the Old Marrieds. Apparently those of us in committed relationships just aren't as fun-loving and exciting as those who are still searching. That could have something to do with the fact that we'd all rather sit in bed and watch tv with our mates than actually go out to a club and bump and grind. And frankly, I'm okay with that. But yeah, there's a core of us in my small group, and a few out of it in the rest of the first year class, that all get along really well and who I feel like are going to become my core group of friends here. Or really already have. Whatever. Don't worry, no Guelphite will be replaced, I have room in my heart for all of you!
So, I really like my courses. Except for the one I'm in right now, which is taught by 'the most brilliant mind in Property in the British Commonwealth'. Except that he's so far gone over the "God I'm Brillian" stage, that he now just teaches us what he thinks should be Property Law, and which everyone else says is actually wrong. Also, he doesn't actually teach us anything in class, only answers questions. And apparently a tree is not a tree, but tall, vertical land. Don't ask me, I don't know.
But yeah, all my other courses are going pretty well. It's lots of reading, and I'm getting a bit nervous for exams, but they're pretty interesting for the most part. Although Criminal is less interesting than I expected, which is odd. I mean, I knew I would want to do Criminal Law, but I figured it would be interesting to learn about at least! Although apparently it gets better next semester, once we've got the basics figured out.
I really like Constitutional and Torts. Probably Constitutional because my professor is this like, cute dorky young smart guy, which always makes a class enjoyable! And Torts, cause it's our small group professor, and he's pretty cool, at least so far, plus the topic is really interesting to me.
And Foundations of Canadian Law is interesting too, it's pretty much history of law, which is actually cool because I didn't know a lot of it and because it's neat to see how our whole system evolved. Plus our dean teaches it, and he really is called "The People's Dean" for a reason, he's such a good performer, so friendly and enthusiastic.
And Legal Research and Writing is good because it actually teaches how to do certain types of legal writing, which apparently a lot of other law schools don't teach in first year, so that's pretty neat. It's also the only class we have any assignments in, for the entire year! Everything else is just reading, reading, reading, non-stop reading. It's a good thing that I am a fast-ass reader!
Hmmm... what else? Oh, my apartment. Bleh. It's okay. The fridge doesn't really work right, I had to stuff a dishtowel in behind the freezer (which is one of those old ones that is actually in the fridge, not on top of it or whatever) so that all my food doesn't freeze. There are a lot of spiders because it is a basement apartment. The cats pee in the hall outside my apartment a lot, because people let them into the building, but then they can't get into their apartments to their litter. And there's no main light in my room, just my little lamp. And I don't have a closet in my room, so my front closet is both my storage closet and my clothing closet. However, it's cheap and warm and I like the paint job and it's big enough for me. So it will do for this year. But I am definitely, DEFINITELY moving next year!
As for Adam, as you all know, things are going particularly well, perhaps better than ever. I was, yes, planning on breaking up with him at the beginning of the year, because I figured it would be the best time for him to get his shit figured out and date other people if he needed to, since we'd be at different schools in different cities. But since August, everything was going so well and we were so happy and couply that I figured I should actually talk to him about it, rather than just do it. So I asked him if he felt that he was going to be needing to date other people still. And he said "I can't guarantee that I will never feel that way again, but the way things are going now, I say definitely not". So I guess that's a good thing! And I think us being apart during the week is really good for us, because it gives us some space and lets him have time during the week where he's 'not in a relationship' in terms of not having to act like a boyfriend. Plus it definitely makes us appreciate the time that we have together!
So, that pretty much catches up to all the important things. I'm sorry that this was a long and boring entry, but I needed to get everything caught up so that from now on I can at least attempt to make the entries more interesting!
Talk to you all soon.. seriously... I have this class twice a week, so I'll be updating whenever I'm in class (although I will confess I skip it sometimes). But I'll try and keep up, I swear!!
